Last night I came across my daughter’s swaddle blanket as I was cleaning up. It brought back some great memories, especially because my friend Brad and his wife are expecting their first born any minute.
I remembered that my son’s blanket was identical, and it got me thinking. I was inspired enough to put a video on Seesmic asking a question: Did your baby have the same swaddle blanket at the hospital?
So far the replies and tweets I’ve received have confirmed that babies born in Chicago, Nashville and New York also had the same blankets. Both of my kids were born in Toronto.
Did you have the same blanket? If so, where was your child born? I wonder if this is the same internationally. Is this a swaddle blanket conspiracy?

Both of my children were born at different hospitals in Indianapolis and had the same blankets. I’m curious how many parents permanently borrowed them from the hospitals. . . and how many blankets did they take.

I had my first child just over a month ago and we had the exact same blanket. Our little man was born in Tampa, Florida.

My son was born in Charlotte last year and definitely had the same swaddle blanket in the hospital.

You can add California to the conspiracy. Both of my sons were born here – three years apart – and they both had the same blanket. I don’t know which company cornered the hospital-baby-blanket supply market, but they seem to have it covered coast-to-coast. 😉

Both of my boys have the exact same blanket. One was born at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia; the other, Southern Regional Hospital in Jonesboro, GA.

Our daughter had that same blanket at the hospital when she was born a year and a half ago in central Virginia.

My daughter actually had two different patterns on her blankets (we were in the hospital 4 days). But, yes, that blanket was one of them. She was born in Virginia.

Same blankets on Long Island in NY – virtually all of the kids on my family going back at least 10 years have had that blanket.
I had always assumed their ubiquity was a combination of “inexpensive in bulk” and a kind of a low-tech security thing – if you see someone walking out of the hospital with a baby in one of those well known blankets there might be something amiss.

Wow, it’s awesome to hear from you all. John made an interesting point about hospital security, I wonder if that’s the case.
I’d love to hear from folks across the pond too. I wonder if these swaddle blankets are international….
Hmm….

4 kids all born in Saint John, New Brunswick Canada between 1996 and 2007 all swaddled in the same blanket! John’s onto something here, I have yet to ever see this blanket sold anywhere, same as the striped kids hospital jammies. Do you have those as well?

I’ve often wondered about this. The same blanket is used at Strong Memorial Hospital in Western NY state. Thanks for the post!

Both kids born at the same hospital in Austin, TX.
BUT I think I’ve uncovered a plot. If you don’t look carefully at the paperwork you have to sign to be discharged, you may miss this. There’s a “ancillary equipment” charge which is almost never picked up by insurance – meaning you own whatever it is. However, if you see that insurance does pay it, a team of hospital staff will tackle you in the parking lot and remove the blanket. It’s like matress tags.
I’ve also heard that they pay interns to monitor homes with newborns and after three months they will break in and take the blankets. The truth is there are only 10,000 blankets at any one time in the US and they haven’t made any new ones since 1958.

Cincinnati has the same blanket. They are a bit bigger than the ones sold at most stores I believe.
Brings back memories. (5 months ago that is).
Thanks,
Brian

My son was born at U.S. Naval Hospital Yokosuka (Japan) in 2000, my daughter at Momouth Medical Center in New Jersey in 2003. Identical patterned swaddling blankets at both. Am I the first one to cite a hospital overseas?

@Brian Congrats!
@Vic, aside from the Great White North, you are the first international sighting of the famous swaddle blanket.
Now I’m DYING to know the story behind it.
