I am a Single-single parent and the father has NEVER made an effort to see his daughter, get to know her ect. ( I have tried and he doesn’t care) He does pay child support (for the most part) But she is going on 8 and he has never met her. (I even have emails saying that he never wanted her) What would happen to her is something happened to me. Even if I had a will with my guardian named. I don’t want her to go to someone (even though ‘related’ thru blood) that doesn’t care. It would devastate her to pull her from the family and people she knows and loves and who care for her. People that aren’t ‘blood’ relatives are her family…seriously!

ANYBODY know what I am suppose to do so that she would be with people that care about her and love her? ! (if something were to happen to me)

  6. Great article! I have some of these bases covered but this has given me a lot more to think about. There is nothing more important than taking care of your family, and if you haven’t written some of these important documents, then you’re not taking care of your family.

I hated having these conversations with my wife- Who’s relatives would take care of our kids, hers or mine? Not fun. Important though, and we are both very glad we had those difficult talks.

I am going to order Alexis’ book today. Thanks for putting this back on my front burner.

  13. This is very vital to have , My Grandmother died this past year and was living with family and never had a Financial durable power of attorney that was updated, and the family had no way to access her bank account to take care of debt that was left behind. SO please Save your family’s from the stress of dealing with these kinds of things the stress of losing a loved one is enough to handle without having to deal with all the other stuff after your gone.. Name someone to care for your finaces and your assets and most importantly your Children. If your Divorced then what? Re-Married with a living Ex, put in writting your demands so the family are not at each other.. and the children are protected. Thank God my grandmother had her burial plot already paid for and we all Knew what she wanted and how she wanted it done. and It was as she wished.

How do I print this article ? I’ve looked high and low for a print icon. I like the info, I need to save it for later when I’m ready to take action. I need a hardcopy.

I have recently become a father of 2 and it only just occurred to me to think about Legal documents and protection plans for my kid incase something happens. I almost got hit by a car the other day and it was like a wake up call. This has been a really useful guide.
