  1. I unplugged cable a few months ago & it has been awesome. My daughter (age 4 1/2) now just watches DVDs (which have enough inherent advertising for their merchandizing) and this Christmas is awesome … she just really wanted one Dora “Castle” because she had seen it while her and her daddy were shopping at Costco.

Amazing. For that and many other reasons (including related to my productivity) I’m not plugging the cable back in.

But I really want to upgrade my iPhone 3G to an iPhone 3GS. But that may be because of twitter.

  2. Chris – I hope you dont mind me stealing this idea for a post on my own blog. We’ve done the same… our girls, 7 and 4, dont watch ANY live tv. We dont even have cable or satellite in the house. Our oldest asked for an ipod which she has seen us with, and the youngest wanted a toy kitchen so she could cook like her mom.

I’m pretty happy with that. They don’t need to be fed all of the nonsense.

We just have 4 TV free weeks behuind us as the line in the house was broken, we adults did not miss much. (IT is repaired since yesterday).

The kids got hooked on TV on an ad free channel, so that they find ads annoying.
But the ads in the kids magaznes are enough to give them ideas.

OTOH I think ‘receiving ads’ is also a media skill one has to lkearn. If you don’t you will have to learn later 😉 Some way or other.

  10. I have debated getting rid of television, or at least cutting back on the cable. We just bought a Wii so I suspect the kids will be playing some games more. We also have some Leapster books for our oldest. I haven’t figured out how to tap into the power of the internet for some of the shows my wife and I like (30 Rock, the Office) but I bet I could use Hulu or just download the shows from the network site to watch. Do you keep a television to watch movies/DVDs?
