Hey – She’s Not 22!

I spend a lot of time online. Working at an interactive agency, part of my job is staying up on the latest online trends which includes having accounts at several social media, community and networking websites. Recently, I inadvertently came across the profile of someone I knew, my niece, and I was surprised to find that she was misrepresenting her age.
Her profile on this particular site featured a rather mature photograph of herself and she indicated that she was 22 years old. She’s not 22 – not even close. I was shocked, and did what any good parent would do; I called my wife.
I wanted to give my niece the benefit of the doubt. Maybe she had mistyped her age, or it was some kind of joke? Maybe her parents knew? My wife and I decided that if someone had discovered one of our kids doing the same (joke or no joke) we’d want to be told.
We called her parents, and informed them of the profile, the picture and the age. We made sure that they knew we were only looking out for their daughter’s best interests, and told them that we hoped that they would do the same for us. They were surprised and a bit frightened by the news, but grateful in the end.
You don’t need me to tell you, the Internet is an amazing place full of wonderful information and power. It’s also full of scumbags who want to do nothing more than take advantage of children. As parents, it’s our jobs to be alert, and help kids stay safe, whether they’re our kids or someone else’s.
