  1. I *love* how you point out that air travel is, in fact, public transportation. It isn’t the same as a subway, but it is technically public transport. If people saw it as such, perhaps their standards would ease up a bit and they’d be more tolerant. I don’t like to hear screaming babies either but it is just something we all have to deal with.

Screaming 8 year olds are another thing altogether…

I am laughing my head off right now. :o) I love your little blurb about children on planes bugging all around them. Trust me, I have 4 kids…only one is a baby now and as a parent you stress out ten times worse than the other people on a flight when you even THINK that your child will be the one who cries…lol Be patient with one another everywhere. Be kind and considerate. If you are sitting next to a child having a hard time, see what you can do to help. The parents would love a smile and compassionate nod rather than the squint of evil.
Fortunately this has not happened with me YET. BUT, if it did…beware of saying rude things that might come my way. We are tired and have prepared the best way we could for this trip in the air. BE KIND.

As a frequent flyer for speaker I agree with you to a point, considering the Damiene influence described in the blog post above. For all the diligent parents and others with infants and young children who get rude reactions from passengers when their kids are, well, being kids, my heart goes out to them. They do NOT deserve the blaming behavior they are forced to experience from some passengers. And, on behalf of all the people who have sat in a seat in front of a kid who kicked the seat and yelled through the flight while their parent(s) ignored the behavior or tried to reason with them as if they were adults I ask you to consider the frustration we fell.

  7. Complaining about kids who scream on airplanes is a right as sacred as blogging about people who complain about kids who scream on airplanes; which in turn is a sacred as the right of a child to scream on an airplane. That said, it is all rather tedious.

  9. It’s nice to hear someone defend our point-of-view. We were talking about planning a trip to Disney for our 2 year old but I’m afraid of the hell she’s going to rain down when she realizes she has to sit still for two hours. It’s nice to have some support to deal with the people who don’t understand the terrible 2’s (and 1’s and 3’s).

  11. CHildren need to be civilized and If I was roaring drunk I would be kicked off the flight and locked up and guess what why should other passengers have to put up with disruptive children who scram carry on misbhave and horsepaly I’m paying good money for a flight So to you ignorant stupid parents What part of all that dont you understand?

  12. Simply put…we were all children once, and well mannered or not we’ve probably fussed in public at least once to our parents dismay (and horror!). I think most of us, as parents, do our best to prepare our children for long trips, but one cannot plan for every single situation that may arise. I posted a couple years ago about a technique that usually works to calm a fussy child. You can read it here http://dadomatic.com/a-technique-to-quell-crying/. It may not work each and every time, because of the circumstances that may be upsetting the child. However, it’s a great method to use, and if at first you don’t succeed, try again.

If you are an observer to a fussy child, one of the best things you can do is smile and be patient. Being supportive helps more than being upset over the situation. Besides, the child won’t fuss forever, and at a bare minimum you will be getting off the plane/train/bus eventually.
