Times have certainly changed. My wife and I struggle with how to give our kids the same kind of Halloween we experienced as kids. The Halloween of our childhood has sadly passed us by. Instead, the mall offers trick or treating, we cart the kids around to relatives houses, and we keep some candy in the house.
A church down the street from us has introduced a new way of trick or treating- they bring it to the church parking lot. Trick or trunk!
Yup, you heard me right. You bring your bags of candy, your kids, trick or treat bags and pop open your trunk. Halloween in a parking lot. The kids walk from car to car collecting candy from fellow parishioners. If you ask me it’s a great way to give the Halloween experience to your children, spend some quality time with friends, and stay safe.
What do you think of trick or trunk? Do you do something similar on Halloween?

A local church does that near our house too. It’s honestly a pretty cool way to do it. Kids are not freaked out by the really ugly things that are all over our neighborhood, the local church gets to get some advertising in, and my kids get Halloween.
The fact is that the holiday, if it can be termed as such, isn’t the same when I was a boy. Protecting my kids is far more important than getting some candy. Since trick or trunk works, I like it.

I am glad to see trick or trunk has caught on in other places. I agree, it is a cool way of doing things and helps protect my little ones from what Halloween has become. Sadly I went into a Halloween store yesterday to look at costumes. I was amazed at how many costumes were inappropriate. Sad isn’t it?

We do that at our church, and some of the families go all out. Two of them apparently got their heads together and created a 50’s style soda fountain (unfortunately, this year I didn’t get a chance to go around and visit, so I didn’t see it myself). That same family passed out light up swords as gifts, and at one point, I joked to my wife that we should line up all the kids on the church lawn and have someone recite bits of “Braveheart”.

That is actually a very cool way to Trick or Treat. Keeps the kids save plus you know where they are getting their candy from. Also I dig the name “Trick or Trunk”. Thanks for sharing.

Boulevard Brewing Company out of Kansas City makes a pretty good one, Bully! Porter. Stouts are a little iffier for me, but I love and adore the Schafly Coffee Stout (out of St. Louis). When I used to live in Springfield, MO, I would order the “black sheep” at Springfield Brew Co and it would either be their Mudhouse Stout or their porter, depending on the season.

I honestly think this is the absolutely laziest way to take you kids trick or treating. Was it really that bad when you went? I grew up in a city and I am still alive. Go walk with your kids door to door and you are spending quality time with them and they are safe. Unless you think your kids are in harms way 3 feet away from you. Not to mention the kids are actually walking. And forget about hanging out with your friends. You threw your social life away when you became a parent.
